As well as its luxuriously decadent chocolates, Belgium boasts that it makes the finest beers in the world. While you may have already sampled some of their reassuringly expensive Stella Artois, make sure while you're there that you try out some of their less famous and more esoteric ales. The unfortunate stereotype that Belgium is a boring country could not be further from the truth.

Belgium became independent under the crown of Leopold I, then enjoyed a tranquil repose until Germany violated its neutrality in 1914 and, as a consequence, brought Great Britain into the First World War. The military cemeteries around Flanders provide a timely reminder of the tragedy of trench warfare during that period.

It is a unique and individual nation made up of two peoples -the Flemish and the Walloons. The Flemish (NW Belgium) are closely related to their Dutch neighbours, the Walloons are far more like the French. Each is fiercely proud of its distinct culture.
