Regional characteristics are a strong feature of German life and stem from when the country was divided into independent states. As a result, the country is incredibly varied and many of the regional capitals, such as Cologne and Munich, feel like national capitals. Some of the cities are rather ugly as they were rebuilt quickly and cheaply after the Second World War, but the smaller towns are attractive and the countryside is rich and varied.

Germans know how to enjoy themselves - their beer festivals are the envy of the world, and they are genuinely friendly and happy to welcome tourists to their country. Accommodation and food are reasonable on the pocket, so make sure you try some of their famous Wurst (sausages) and sample their cheap and tasty beer.

Otto von Bismarck's imperialistic ambitions were to fail, adding to the feelings of discontent throughout Europe during the early 20th century and tragically providing the catalyst for what was to become the First World War.

Germany's defeat led to the Weimar Republic and its inevitable collapse, which in turn led to the rise of Hitler, who used the Germans' anger and discontent after the hyper-inflation of the 1920s and the depression of the 1930s to secure his own place in power. Hitler's aggressive invasion of neighbouring countries led to the outbreak of the Second World War, when atrocities were committed on all sides. Germany's eventual defeat led to a partition between east and west, a situation epitomised by Berlin and its famous wall. Since being torn down in 1989, Germany has tried hard to heal the rift between East and West, and progress is finally being made.
