Greece Hotels - Hotels in Greece

Holidaymakers flock to Greece every year either to savour the culture of the capital city, Athens, or to soak up the sun on one of the 166 inhabited islands. While Athens has earned a reputation as Europe's most polluted city, the islands are still a magnet for those seeking escapism. There are islands to suit all tastes, from the small and peaceful, where there is only a weekly boat which brings supplies, to those which rival Ibiza - built-up resorts with a nonstop party atmosphere.

Conquered by the Ottomans in the 15th century, the Greeks did not regain their independence until 1829, when they defeated their perennial adversaries, the Turks, in a bloody war. The poor relations between the Greeks and the Turks were intensified in 1974 by Turkey's invasion of Cyprus - the island that is, ironically, the supposed birthplace of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. Even as recently as 1998, the Cyprus problem was threatening the present peace between Greece and Turkey.
