Hungary Hotels - Hotels in Hungary

Hungary has always been very different from its East European neighbours. The people identify strongly with the West while displaying a strong pride in themselves as Magyars. Hungary's popularity as a tourist destination is growing by the year, and is only likely to increase with membership of the European Union. This is understandable as Budapest becomes known as one of the world's most beautiful cities - as sophisticated and fashionable as any in Western Europe.

The attempted revolution from the Communists in 1956 is ingrained in most people's memories, as are the images of Soviet tanks trundling into Budapest to suppress rebellion. It was a more peaceful revolution in 1989 that established Hungary once more as an independent republic.

The majority of Hungarians are descended from the Magyars -an Asiatic tribe that reached the Danube in the 9th century, and settled there to establish the Arpad dynasty. They enjoyed a good 600 years of independence before the Ottomans moved in and occupied the area now known as Hungary. In the 17th century, the Hungarians succumbed to the charms of the Austrian Habsburgs who, in 1867, agreed to grant them an equal status under the joint Austro-Hungarian Empire. This partnership proved fruitful enough until war broke out in 1914. The Hungarians were then independent again until 1944 and the German occupation of their country. Following the horror of the Second World War, Hungary dabbled with republicanism before falling to the Communists in 1949 - a subjugation that was to last just over 40 years.
