Italy is synonymous with the Romans. The ancient amphitheatre, the Colosseum, is the symbol of Rome. A famous Roman saying goes 'When the Colosseum falls, Rome will fall'. By 275 BC, the Romans - the race founded in legend by Romulus - had made Italy their own, as well as much of the rest of Europe. Their rule ended in the fifth century AD. The Roman Empire's downfall led to chaos, as not even the Pope or the Holy Roman Emperor could decide who ruled what. Ironically, as the power of Rome declined, it became the centre of the Christian Church, the legacy of which can be seen today in the Vatican City - a tiny independent state which attracts tourists and devout Roman Catholics alike, and has its own police force (the Swiss Guards) and postal service.
The Renaissance in the 15th century and the emergence of artistic giants like Da Vinci and Michelangelo breathed new life into the country.
The advent of Mussolini and the rise of Fascism in Italy marked the country's darkest days. Having gained his position through his excellent public relations skills, Mussolini then entered into an alliance with Hitler - a man whose respect Mussolini craved but never won. Italy's alliance with Germany was a mistake that cost thousands of lives, including inevitably that of Mussolini himself. Since then, Italy has had more than 50 governments. This peculiar statistic is attributed to widespread political corruption, which in the home country of the Mafia, is hardly surprising.
