Alghero is a town of thirty five thousand on the island of Sardinia (Sardegna in Italian) . The town lies in the north west of the island. The town functions independently of tourism which is unusual for towns in Sardegna and is a working fishing port. The town has retained much of its Hispanic or Catalan influence from the fourteenth century invasion and many of the directions and signs are written in both Catalan and Italian. The old town has original city walls interspersed with seven defensive towers of which the Porta Terra is the best example. The best examples of architecture are near the Cathedral with the Palazzo d'Albis and Palau Reial showing the Catalan Gothic style.
