Cortona is a small town in Tuscany set on a hill overlooking the Val di Chiana plain, an area populated by the cows that produce the famous Florentine steaks. It affords great views of the Tuscan villages spread out over the plains. It was once one of the twelve Etruscan cities and there are many Etruscan tombs around the town. Part of the current city walls enclose some of the original Etruscan wall. Most of the other Etruscan artefacts can be found in the town's museum. The town's centre is medieval with grey and ochre coloured buildings lining winding steep streets.
