Ferrara is a town in the region of Emilia-Romagna and has a population of one hundred and fifty thousand. It lies on one of the braches of the Po river. The town is full of fourteenth century houses that line the broad streets and date from the time of the court of the family of Este. The centre of the town is dominated by a castle of the same period, Castello Estense, with a moat and four large towers. There are a number of churches and a beautiful Gothic cathedral. The national picture gallery is housed in the beautiful palace of diamonds so called for its diamond cut stones on the façade.
