Trieste is part of the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and is located at the north eastern tip of Italy on the border with Slovenia. The port city sits in its own Gulf looking into the Adriatic Sea. The city was an important part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire and as such much of what there is to see in the city is Austrian architecture. The best place to enjoy the city is the hill of San Giusto, the patron saint of the city. Here there is the castle of the fifteenth century Venetians and this overlooks Roman ruins. The one thousand year old cathedral still holds remains of the original Roman temple. The Risiera di San Sabba, the former rice processing factory is a museum to the Fascist war crimes in the region.
