Portugal Hotels - Hotels in Portugal

Portugal attracts thousands of visitors every year on the basis of its wonderful sandy beaches and its reputation as one of Europe's cheapest countries. The fact that Portugal is a poor country crippled with high unemployment is inescapable. The 1990s were plagued with recession and a backwardness in education and agriculture. However, the Expo in '98 attracted over eight million visitors and brought Portugal back to the world's attention.

Despite their lack of prosperity, the Portuguese are a fun-loving people who enjoy a good time just as much as their neighbours, the Spanish. As a foreign visitor to their country, you will be made to feel very welcome.

A republic since 1910, Portugal's heyday came during the 15th century when explorers such as Vasco Da Gama helped its overseas empire to expand through the discovery of the African coast, India, China and finally, Brazil. Conflict with Spain and other European countries eventually put paid to Portugal's imperialistic ambitions, but she went on to form an alliance with Britain - a special relationship which still remains to this day.
