Travellers flock to Spain every year by the millions, looking to take advantage of the country's low costs and excellent climate. With mile upon mile of coastline, and the Pyrenees in the North, it is one of the most attractive countries in Europe. Although most people come to Spain for sun, sand and sangria, it is also a country of culture. The works of its famous painters grace the walls of the Prado in Madrid, the Dali gallery in Figueres and the Picasso gallery in Barcelona. A visit to these excellent art houses can be just as fulfilling as a day's inactivity on the beach.

Spain is an eclectic country, the result of the many foreign invaders that have come and gone through the centuries -Iberians, Celts, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, to name just a few. The Romans called the country 'Hispania', from which we get Spain's modern name.

Spaniards endured civil war in the 20th century (1936-1939), when General Francisco Franco's Nationalists overthrew the new democratic republic with considerable help from Hitler's Nazi Germany. Franco's death in 1975 and the appointment of Juan Carlos as his successor brought dictatorial rule to an end. Spain became a democracy and was admitted to the European Union in 1986.

One or two things may surprise you upon your first visit to Spain. The Spanish, for example, do not sleep in the afternoon. The siesta is more of an extended lunch than a lazy afternoon. Also, English is not as widely spoken as many travellers expect. The regional languages of Catalan (in Catalonia), Basque (in Navarra), and Galician (in the north-west) prevail alongside Spanish - so you may well need a phrasebook.
