This land-locked nation is a land of contrasts: four different languages (French, German, Italian and Romansch); clean, efficient cities; stunning Alpine scenery; a neutral country with an army of half a million.

Central referendums on a variety of issues are common and outdoor public votes still take place in rural areas. The Swiss central government in Berne, therefore, has little power domestically and deals primarily with international affairs.

Today, Switzerland is known for its secretive banking system and its watch-making industry. On a per capita basis, it remains the world's richest country, with the Swiss franc (Sfr) one of the strongest currencies (£1 is approximately 2.4 Sfr; $1 is roughly 1.2 Sfr.). This makes Switzerland one of Europe's most expensive destinations, but a visit there is certainly worth the investment. There is virtually no unemployment or crime and everyone is always on time. In addition, the Swiss people themselves are friendly and their knowledge of languages makes it easy for them to help you. If your idea of heaven is cleanliness, efficiency and beauty, you would have to be cuckoo not to love Switzerland.
