Four nations make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with four very different cultures: English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish. There is arguably more history and legend crammed into these small islands than in any other country in Europe.

England, the largest of the four countries, is dominated by the capital, London, which has recently been voted one of the 50 'places of a lifetime' to visit by the National Geographic Society. It is also one of the world's most fashionable cities. While this may be the case, London is pricey even for the British. Although the capital has a fair bit of history and many famous sites to see, you will only get a true impression of Britain if you travel further afield.

The history of Britain is characterised by a number of pivotal dates: 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, 1215 and the Magna Carta, the 17th century and the Civil War, and 1966, when England won the World Cup! Most important, though, to Britain's development as a world power, was the Industrial Revolution. By this time, Scotland, England and Wales were united as one nation, and soon began to take on the role of 'workshop of the world', such was their productivity and success at industry. With its enormous empire, Britain continued to dominate into the 20th century, until the strain of stepping headfirst into two world wars gradually led to its decline.

In recent years, the perennial Scottish and Welsh rumblings for independence from the English government in Westminster have finally borne fruit. The Scots and the Welsh now have their own parliaments and assemblies after referendums in their countries. The situation in Northern Ireland is still fragile but progress is being made there too and things are looking more optimistic.
